Lion Face.

Taken from the medieval (C.1340) carvings found upon the misericords and supports within the choir stalls of Lancaster Priory. These carvings are some of the oldest surviving church carving in England and when carved these carvings and the choir stalls are thought to have been the finest examples in the country. Unfortunately these choir stalls were damaged and defaced by Oliver Cromwell during the English civil war and revolution of the mid 17^th Century. These carvings belong to a small collection we have reproduced from Lancaster and all being depictions of faces, it is thought that some are Caricatures of the monks and carvers themselves.

This fine example is known as Lion Face, it is doubtful that this is a portrait of an actual lion but that of a man done as caricature with those characteristics.
